American Psychiatric Association (APA) Practice Guidelines
A great resource for NP students but can also be adapted for use with other students as well. These guidelines are free for download, although some other extras such as clinical tools are by paid subscription only. Topics covered include: PTSD, Dementias, BPD, Bipolar Disorder, Delirium, Eating Disorders, Major Depressive Disorders, OCD, Panic Disorder,Schizophrenia, Substance Use Disorders Suicidal Behaviors and the Psychiatric Evaluation of Adults. A treasure chest of resources that are easily accessible and reliable.
Concurrent Disorders: Curriculum Resources
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canada's largest addiction and mental health teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto. They produce some really nice materials for educators and clinicians. This particular module focuses on the situation in which a person has both a mental health and a substance use problem. There are power point slides with notes which will certainly reduce prep time while providing content to students regarding this especially difficult clinical situation.

In Addition, CAMH also offers a primary care addiction toolkit composed of three modules: Fundamentals of Addiction, Dealing with Alcohol Problems and Smoking Cessation. Each includes resources for patients and their families as well as practice guidelines and reference materials. Although some of this information is specific to Canada, there is a great deal here that can be incorporated into a discussion of these important topics.
Mental Health America: Ranking America's Mental Health:
An Analysis of Depression Across the States

Whenever possible I always try to connect students with data that is specific to their communities and the populations they are serving. This resource considers several measures of depression and mental health including percentage of adults and adolescents who had at least one major depressive episode in the last year as well as the number of days in the past 30 in which mental health was reported as not good. It's limited since it doesn't break down into counties but still very interesting and could be used as a catalyst for discussing why Utah for instance, was the most depressed state and South Dakota was the least!
Enhancing Motivation for Change in
Substance Abuse Treatment
This resource provided by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) offers guidelines to help clinicians influence the change process in their clients by incorporating motivational interventions into substance abuse treatment programs. Change within a program/institution to enhance the health of those who access it.......Sounds like a good DNP project!
Action Steps for Improving Women's Mental Health
This is another great resource from SAMHSA!  I can see where it would be a good fit for a DNP course/project because it presents significant mental health concerns for a specific population, namely women and girls, while providing action steps that can be taken to improve their health and well being. Several of these action steps take place at the macro level. There is a wonderful conceptual framework as well as an expansive listing of additional resources including clinical tools that will keep the often too busy grad student engaged :).
