Global Health Resources for Teaching Academic Year 2015 – 2016

The world as we know it is getting smaller and smaller! Technology, travel, commerce, and communication have brought us together in ways that has increased our awareness and also our risks for health issues taking place on a global level. The economies of various countries, including our own in the US, demands that we also engage in a discourse related to the social determinants of health. I hope these resources help you to start this conversation in your courses!

The World Health Organization

The Pan American Health Organization
This is the world’s oldest international public health agency. It’s focus is the America’s. This particular page on their site has lots of good graphed statistics regarding diseases and risk factors experienced by people in these countries.

UNICEF
Another resource for data, specifically as it concerns the international health of children.

The World Bank
There is a growing appreciation and understanding of the social determinants of health and the World Bank is a great resource for information related to economic policy and health.

The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD)
This site has some great visual graphics covering a wide range of variables that can be socially connected to the health of people in countries around the world.

The Global Health Data Exchange
This is a massive resource of country specific surveys, reports, statistics etc. Easy to use – invaluable!
